Steve Smith replaces MS Dhoni as RPS captain

Steve Smith Replaces MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni the name which no one could forget in the history of cricket. In 2014, MS Dhoni silently took retirement from Indian Test Cricket. Recent he step down captaincy from limited overs format. And now we get to know that Steve Smith replaces MS Dhoni as Rising Pune Supergiants Captain.

Dhoni is the only player who had captained all IPL matches he played. He has led Chennai Super Kings to two consecutive IPL titles (2010, 2011). Even he led CSK to Champions League T20. Though he performed well amongst the other team mate, his personal form was going weak. However, he had scored 284 runs in 12 innings at a strike-rate of 135.

Sanjeev Goenka

RPS team owner – Sanjeev Goenka said in an interview to India Today why they pick Steve Smith as captain. “We have opted for Steve Smith as captain of RPS for the forthcoming IPL season. We wanted a young captain. We spoke to Steve Smith and he agreed. We have communicated the decision to Dhoni. He is a thorough professional. Dhoni and Smith share a great rapport. MS is ready to help him on the field.”

The decision comes on IPL player auction event, on February 19, 2017. Dhoni had a great success with CSK, however he couldn’t find that success with RPS in last year. They finished second-last on the points table with only five wins to their credit. It was also the first time that Dhoni had failed to lead his side to the playoffs in IPL.

Steve Smith

In 2012, Steve Smith debuted in IPL, he has played 54 matches and scored 1231 runs in IPL. Smith scored a century in IPL and has a average of 36.21. He is a skipper of Australian Cricket team and has been successful too. Looking at his stats, RPS can be a tough competition for other IPL team this season.
